RIVERS RERUN: INEC DIRECTOR OF LEGAL RESIGNS

The refusal of INEC to announce the results on all outstanding results in Rivers state has continued to polarize the country's electoral umpire. Last week Rising Tide reported that the Director of Legal, Ibrahim Bawa was having a running battle with Mrs. Amina Zakari who has insisted that the further announcement of results in the state be suspended. Bawa, on the other hand, argues that INEC as a body established by law cannot act contrary to the law that empowers it. Two weeks ago, the disagreement led to a heated debate and Mrs. Zakari, the de facto coordinator of INEC, had threatened to make ''INEC uncomfortable'' for Mr. Bawa.
Rising Tide can now break the news that the Mr. Bawa has resigned. His resignation letter was submitted to the Chairman of INEC last week Thursday. Our correspondent who has been tracking the matter reports that Mrs. Zakari's desperation to bend the rules to favour a particular political party in the Rivers rerun elections has become very troubling for the INEC chairman who has remained quiet on the issue. One senior staff of the commission told our correspondent that ''She is desperate to have her way, and she is taking the matter too personal. Director of Legal is also not prepared to shift his grounds, he has threatened to resign."
RTN is still trying to contact the spokesman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). More details soon.
